What is baptism?
Baptism is a biblical act. It is a prophetic and visible proclamation of our faith in Jesus.
Jesus taught us this
Jesus Himself was baptized, even though He was sinless. It is an example for us. He also instructed His followers to baptize others – as part of the Great Commission:
“Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit.”
– Matt. 28:19
Baptism in the Bible
Philip and the Ethiopian Eunuch
“Look, here is water—what prevents me from being baptized?”
– Acts 8:36
When an angel sent Philip to the Ethiopian eunuch, he proclaimed the gospel. The eunuch believed – and was immediately baptized.
What does baptism mean?
Baptism is not just a symbolic act – it is something deep and spiritual:
• We bury our old self and are raised up as new people (Rom. 6)
• We express our faith and confession in Jesus Christ (1 Peter 3:21)
• It is a covenant with God, where we say, “I belong to Him.”
Baptism does not save – but…
…it is a public proclamation that you already have faith and a confession in Jesus as Lord.
3 Reasons to be baptized
- Jesus did it – and we want to follow Him!
- God commanded us – baptism is part of obeying Jesus.
- It shows your faith – baptism is an outward sign of what has already happened inwardly.
How do we baptize?
We baptize by fully immersing you in water – in the faith of Jesus, and in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit.
It is a sign of the real change in your life.
Do you want to be baptized?
Then you must…
• Believe in Jesus as Lord and Savior.
• Be ready to say yes to Him – for life.
“I believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God!”
– Acts 8:37
Baptism is a natural step once you have come to faith in Jesus. In baptism, we bury the old life and rise to new life with Him.
We would be very happy to talk and help you if you have any questions or if you wish to be baptized.
Child Blessing
In City Church Tórshavn, we do not perform infant baptisms. However, we have child blessings, where we as a church family stand together with the parents and the child and pray for God’s blessing over them. We see that this is what Mary and Joseph did with Jesus. (Luke 2:21-40)
And Jesus Himself says, “Let the little children come to Me, and do not forbid them, for of such is the kingdom of God.” (Mark 10:15-16)
Youth Blessing
When teenagers reach the 7th grade, they are invited to be part of the youth blessing. It begins in January, and we meet once a week until Easter. Here, the young people will receive teaching on what it means to start their journey to becoming adults. Every week there is a new topic to be covered. It concludes with the youth blessing itself, where prayers are said and they are blessed and celebrated by the church.
